Asheville police officer charged with child abuse

ASHEVILLE, NC (AP) -- An Asheville police officer has been charged with misdemeanor child abuse after investigators found bruises on a child after a spanking.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported that 27-year-old Aubrey Gerrand Green was placed on paid administrative leave earlier this month for an internal investigation.

Sgt. Dave Romick says Green joined the department in 2007 and works as a patrol officer. Romick said he could release no other information because of the investigation.

An arrest warrant states that Green is not the child's father. It says Green hit the child's buttocks hard enough on Oct. 31 to cause significant bruising.

The child's mother, 22-year-old Maggie Nicole Jones, also is charged with misdemeanor child abuse for allowing Green to strike the child.

It was not clear if Green has an attorney.
