WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is announcing a $500 million package of executive actions and legislative proposals aimed at reducing gun violence a month after a mass shooting in Connecticut killed 20 elementary school children.

The package includes a call on Congress to ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazine and it would close loopholes in the gun sale background check system.

Obama also is signing 23 executive actions - which require no congressional approval - including several aimed at improving access to data for background checks. A presidential memorandum will instruct the Centers for Disease Control to research causes and prevention of gun violence.

In addition, Obama will nominate Todd Jones as director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Jones currently is the acting director of the agency.

If we can all just unplug our knee-jerk emotional responses please allow me to make a very specific point that everyone seems to keep missing… If our government can arbitrarily dismiss a specific portion of the Bill of Rights without popular consent, debate or any other form of popular discourse, then who’s to say they can’t or won’t do it to any other component of the Bill of Rights…

Some of you will read this and decide immediately that I’m spouting nonsense. To those people I simply ask for the courtesy of hearing me out.

We already live in a time where the media tells us what is and is not reality. We are told that freedom of speech exists as long as you’re nice. We have cameras everywhere now that not only infringe upon our privacy our right of search and seizure and our right to due process. We seem to be taxed without representation… Cus’ no one in office seemed to give a damn what I thought. And the government tells us that it’s good for us. They say it’s in our best interest. They say it’s too complicated and we would not understand.

I remember a time when nobody believed anything the government had to say about anything no matter who was in office… Our government has rarely kept a promise and cannot even seem to follow the very law enforced upon its citizens. If that was the cases then why are we so surprised that they are doing this to us and why are we ok with it? I don’t mind paying some taxes for my state and my nation in that order. I appreciate that there are people out there that need a little help. And as a gun owner and a sports man I have no clue why anyone needs a 30 round magazine for hunting… However I am not at all comfortable with the government deciding anything for me and then telling me it’s in MY best interest after the fact… And no matter how you feel about gun legislation I cannot understand why ya’ll don’t understand that. Let the people of each state decide. Let people vote their conscience and make the best and fairest decisions possible. But don’t trust the guys in Washington; don’t trust the NRA or the lobbyist or the Liberal nut jobs or the news… Have faith in our Bill of Rights and vote for what is right and fair. Amen

The only 2 things the President is proposing that is going to make any differenc IMO, is the Universal background check and increased penalty for proxy buying/trafficking.

The only thing remotely resembling gun CONTROL is the ban on assault weapons (I'll get back to this in a minute.
The NRA wanted to address mental health? CHECK
The NRA wanted to put officers in schools? CHECK
the NRA did NOT want an assault weapons ban
the NRA did not want magazines down sized

You got 50% NRA
But in actuality you got far more
Assault weapons make up a very small portion of gun sales and no other weapons were mentioned.
Now I actually called for the assault weapons ban re-instatement. Why? Because I was afraid of what THIS government would do.
The NRA has mis played this. They should have been out front calling for AW bans. They already had LEOs in schools.
But no - true to their myopic thinking they didn't want ANY restrictions. That was a bad attitude after 20 kids died.
The 2nd amendment has limitations folks. Look up District of
Columbia v Heller and READ the majority opinion of Judge Antonin Scalia and the other conservative judges on the Supreme Court. Read the interview he did on Fox news right after THAT ruling.
Sorry - but anyone who pays attention knows that this day was coming and the NRA did NOTHING to minimize the damage. (The NRA does NOT mention Heller - it was a devastating defeat for them).

Now we have not only an AW ban but a magazine down sizing too.
Politically the NRA screwed up.
Look, as a gun owner I don't need an AW. I will stick with my 9mm thank you very much. IF I need more than 10 bullets I shouldn't own a gun but I've got spares and I can change mags pretty quick.
The AW ban won't do a darn thing to prevent another Sandy Hook - nor will down sized mags. This is feel good do nothing legislation - something our government is good at.
The NRA did nothing to be out front and it bit us in the butt.
A law abiding gun owner has nothing to worry about from back ground checks or AW bans or reduced mag capacity.
"The 2nd Amendment has limitations, no doubt......" Judge
Antonin Scalia

Let's cut to the chase and just do a thorough BACKGROUND CHECK of him and let the chips fall where they may, the biggest part of the problem lays with the soft approach of the left and their band-aids, they're do good, touch feely things. The problem is no one is willing to profile, whether it's a mental problem (Ft Hood) or a race thing, when you have a known problem you have to act, something this administration is good about skirting around, they always want to throw money at it, just it's always misdirected, never let a crisis go to waste. The first response the NRA had was placing an armed gaurd in each school, something they mocked, now dejavu, always proactive this left is.

Time for an impeachment! Whenever you go against Congress once, then you will do it again. Step down Obama!

The "executive order" wasn't just made-up by President Obama you know. He is THE PRESIDENT. Get over your anger little man, 4 more years baybeee !

You are in the minority, put your big girl panties on and deal with it.

I agree Impeach Obama. The Govt. needs to stop punishing honest people and start punishing criminals.

Are you ready? Here it comes...

I support the President 100% on this issue. everything that he laid out was spot on, and will as he stated help curb the level of violence one can carry out. Hopefully Congress will see the logic involved and make the sensible decision.

The only thing that will curb violence is to stop letting these criminals that go out and kill innocent people just sit behind bars and live off of us people that have to get up and go to work. If someone is convicted of something like shooting up a movie theater, go ahead and put them to death I bet that would curb violence.

I agree with you. I feel if an individual can be so evil to take someone's life. The punishment should fit the crime. Nothing in this world is worth someone taking another's life. If they have it in them to kill, they'll kill again. Time to put them down. However, we has a society have to wake up and put measures in place to protect ourselves and the society as a whole.

know its SAD people like you can vote. The president LIED, the Second has NOTHING to do with hunting. It is there to enable citizens to fight a tyrannical government. The Democrats, liberal nut jobs in general, keep spewing this lie to confuse people that will believe it.

BTW, I will be sure to attach a background check application to my pistol. That way if someone steals it they will be sure to fill it out and make sure its legal for them to have.

YOU CANT FIX STUPID!

Now who is talking about taking people's liberties away? The President Lied?? Prove it, don't just make an ignorant statement... put some sauce on that steak. Also your opinion of what the 2nd amendment is or isn't is just your opinion. Obviously there is a lot more to it than what you have presented because they would have added the words protection, tyrannical, or even government to the terminology of the 2nd amendment if they wanted it's protection to mean what you are implying. Also why am I a nut job? You don't even know me.

BTW if someone steals your weapon it is a crime. You should report that.

That is $500,000,000 wasted. The fact remains........there are millions of guns, magazines and rounds of ammo in possession of the American public. If someone wants to do harm to someone else, they will find a way. There is NO WAY that the government can pass enough laws to prevent such from happening. If it does, maybe the anti-gunners will finally open their eyes and see what is happening, and they will soon be slaves of the government. But, it might be too late by then. Every time a shooting happens, the knee-jerk reactions of Congress are predictable, punish everybody, not just the offender. If all is calm for a few months, it will all blow over. The Governor of NY, in his wisdom signed a piece of legislation that is totally counter-productive. It mentions that if someone undergoing psychiatric treatment owns a gun, their doctor can have it confiscated, or something similar to this. If a gun owner knows he/she will lose their firearm if they seek psychiatric treatment, would this not be a deterrant to seek such treatment?

Seriously. Only 500 million?

Remember the newspaper that published the names of law abiding gun owners up north? I'd like for someone to publish the names of every clown that voted for Obama.

He has an election to pay off.

that's not a drop in the bucket. that $500 mill will be spent paying off all the NPR stations before any psychologist or bureaucrat gets enough money to fly around and give speeches.
