Runners pound pavement in annual Wrightsville Beach Marathon

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- It was a sea of green today during the Quintiles Wrightsville Beach Marathon.

The race began early in the morning on Wrightsville Beach. The course extended along Causeway Drive, Eastwood Road, Military Cutoff and through Landfall with runners crossing the finish line at Mayfaire Town Center.

Participants could run the full marathon or opt to run a half marathon.

"It's just an accomplishment," Susan Holland said. "I've never been a runner, so to be able to do this is quite the accomplishment."

This was the fourth year of the marathon. Organizers say it has doubled in size since the first year.

Most of the proceeds raised from the race will be donated to the Landfall Foundation and the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
