Elections board reports record midterm turnout

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — State officials say voters have set a record for ballots cast in a midterm election in North Carolina.

The North Carolina State Board of Elections reported Tuesday that 2,717,920 voters had cast ballots as of 10:34 p.m. In 2010, the board recorded a turnout of 2,700,393 voters.

Eight percent of the state’s precincts had yet to report when the record was set.

Executive Director Kim Strach said early voting increased by more than 20 percent, helping to set the record. Strach commended county election officials for their work on behalf of the state’s voters.
