Charter school founder sues former superintendent

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The founder of the Roger Bacon Academy Inc. has filed a lawsuit against the recently-ousted head of the Brunswick County Schools.

In a suit notarized and filed in New Hanover County Tuesday, Baker Mitchell Jr. alleges Dr. Edward Pruden has been an outspoken critic of the system of operation of charter schools. The suit added Pruden said that charter schools assist in the “dismantling” of North Carolina’s system of public education. The suit, a total of 14 pages, makes several other examples of items it calls defamatory to the RBA.

The suit also cites several media stories in which Pruden was quoted talking about charter schools, specifically Charter Day School in Leland.

Mitchell is seeking damages in excess of $100,000 for unfair and deceptive practices, as well as punitive damages.

Mitchell founded RBA in 1999. The company operates four public charter schools in Brunswick, New Hanover and Columbus counties.

On November 12, The Brunswick Board of Education voted to terminate Pruden’s contract. Pruden served as superintendent from July 2010 to November 2014.
