FIRST ON 3: Prosecutor says suspect in hit-and-run called 911, planned to move

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man is in jail facing charges tied to a hit-and-run earlier this month in New Hanover County that left four people injured, and prosecutors say the suspect tried to throw them off his trail.

Highway Patrol arrested Aaron Blake Williams, 23, yesterday on a felony charge of hit and run causing serious injury and reckless driving. He is in the New Hanover County Jail under $500,000 bond.

Williams appear in court by video from jail this afternoon. During the hearing today prosecutors said the person who called 911 claiming to have witnessed the crash and a green SUV driving away from the scene was actually Williams. They also said Williams took his car to South Carolina for repairs claiming he’d hit a deer, and that he put his two-week notice in at work with plans to move to Georgia. Williams also allegedly told a coworker about the crash.

Around 2 a.m. on Oct. 10, a woman and three men were walking on Marsh Oaks Drive when they were hit by a SUV. New Hanover High School lacrosse coach Keith Hatcher, former head football coach Frank Meehan, his wife Maureen and Jeffrey West were hit. The three men are still in the hospital with serious injuries. In an ONLY ON 3 interview Maureen Meehan said she does not remember seeing or hearing the SUV before the crash. Hatcher’s wife told WWAY he doesn’t remember attending a football game Friday afternoon. West was in a medically induced coma as of Friday afternoon.

During that interview WWAY asked Maureen Meehan and the wives of the other men injured if they could forgive whoever was driving that night. Their answers varied. Check out the video above to see what they each had to say.
