New DOT sign in Brunswick County misspelled

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A sign put up on US 17/74/76 this week in Leland is causing some social media chatter.

The sign, where 17/74/76 split after motorists leave the Causeway area, displays Whiteville as “Whitevllie.”

According to a post from a DOT engineer, they are aware of the problem and are working to correct it.

“They are made by the prison system,” the post said about the signs. “Unfortunately, we contract out a lot of our design and inspection and we don’t always have local people inspecting the signs.”

We’ve reached out to the DOT to see how errors like these are fixed and how much it costs to fix them. We were told the error will not cost the DOT or taxpayers any money.

“The contractor has contacted his subcontractor, who has contacted the sign manufacture, and informed them of the error,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman wasn’t sure how long it would take to fix the error.
