UPDATE: Amber Alert cancelled for 11-year-old
LELAND, NC (WWAY ) — Just two hours after Leland Police issued an Amber Alert for an 11-year-old, they cancelled it Thursday.
Investigators said they confirmed that Elisha Jones is with her grandmother in Baltimore.
They said they found that the grandmother had failed to tell the father that she had permission from the mother to pick up Jones from Leland Middle School.
Investigators said the mother, who lives in New Jersey, was aware that the grandmother would be picking up Jones. They went on to say there will be no charges regarding this case
Earlier Thursday night, police issued an Amber Alert for Jones after she was last seen around 11 a.m. at Leland Middle School.
Police said they were looking for the woman in the surveillance picture, later identified as her grandmother, who was driving the car in the second surveillance picture.
While Jones is safe, the incident brings up some questions. WWAY made calls to Brunswick County Schools spokeswoman Jessica Swencki to ask her whether proper protocols were followed when Jones was signed out at school.
In an email, Swencki said the girl’s grandmother went into the main office and asked to check the student out. The receptionist told her to follow security protocol by presenting an ID and signing in through the county’s Ident-a-Kid system. However, before completing the protocol, Swencki said the grandmother left the main office and removed the student from campus.
“The situation that transpired earlier today at Leland Middle School was perpetrated by an individual who intentionally circumvented the procedures and removed this student from campus,” Swencki said.
“This is a teachable moment. We ask all parents and guardians to talk with your children about who is permitted to pick them up from school. We also encourage parents to teach their children to question any individual, including family members, who come to school to check them out unexpectedly.”
WWAY asked Swencki why Elisha was brought to the office before the grandmother got through with signing her out, and when did school staff find out that the grandmother had not followed procedure. She said that is part of their investigation.
