Oak Island man explains reaction to Trump speech gone viral

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — A Brunswick County man has found himself in the middle of the controversy surrounding Donald Trump’s speech yesterday in Wilmington.

Trump has come under fire for a comment he made during the speech at UNCW about gun rights and Democrat opponent Hillary Clinton.

“If she gets to pick her judges… nothing you can do, folks,” Trump said. “Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is. I don’t know.”

Darrell Vickers of Oak Island was sitting behind Trump when he made the comment, and his reaction was caught on the national video pool feed of the event. Replays of it have gone viral.

Vickers spent much of today doing interviews with news outlets around the world, including WWAY, about what he thought of Trump’s comments.

“What I was thinking was exactly what I said to the lady sitting next to me and I said to her, ‘I can’t believe he said that. The news media will have a hey day with that,'” Vickers said this afternoon at his home. “That’s what I said. That’s what I was thinking.”

Vickers was at the rally, because he said Trump would make a good president.

“I just spent an hour listening to Trump and I found out that he was a very intelligent man,” Vickers said.

Vickers said he found Trump to be “intelligent,” “ethical” and having “the moral character we need,” said Trump got off-script when he tried to make what Vickers called “a bad joke.”

“He should just say, ‘I’m sorry. I screwed up. I shouldn’t have said that in the first place and let’s move on to things that really matter,'” Vickers said.

Meanwhile, Vickers’ reaction is still getting attention around the world.

“I’m just a poor guy from Oak Island,” Vickers said. “I mean we have the occasional shark bite down here, which everybody knows about, but I am just surprised. I have done interviews with CNN London England, Skype interviews with Canada.”

We’ve posted the entire segment of Trump’s speech that include the comment in question. You can check it out here and then let us know what you think he meant.
