Columbus County investigating threats of clowns purging the schools


COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office and School District are investigating threats made on social media concerning “clowns” and “purging.”

The Sheriff’s Office says these posts were directed to residents of Columbus County. Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Michelle Tatum says they are actively investigating the origin and validity of these posts.

Tatum says the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers will remain vigilant and will continue to closely monitor all activity at area schools.

A screenshot of an Instagram post is being shared on Facebook.  The screenshot is from the private group clownsofwhiteville.  The post says the group is purging on the 14th and that those who think they are joking will find out.

Columbus County Schools released a statement on their Facebook page.

“The safety of our students is top priority. Our school system will continue to carefully monitor each student, and will be diligent about all activity occurring on or near the school grounds,” the post reads. “In addition, local law enforcement will be on campus to help provide support to the existing school resource officers in the coming days. Our close partnership with local law enforcement enables us to provide a safe environment for all of our students and staff. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and take necessary actions as recommended.”
