Rocky Point man sentenced for murder and robbery
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – A Rocky Point man will spend at least 20 years behind bars for his role in a home invasion and deadly shooting.
Brent Thomas James Hyatt, 27, pleaded guilty to Second Degree Murder, Attempted Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Conspiracy to Commit Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury, First Degree Burglary, two counts of Cruelty to Animals, and two counts of First Degree Kidnapping.
On May 4, 2015, New Hanover County deputies responded to a home invasion and shooting at 412 Point View Court.
When they arrived they found Joshua Roydes, who was shot in the elbow, Yancey Edwards, who was shot multiple times and died, and two dogs shot to death.
Witnesses told deputies that two black males entered their home, shot the two dogs, busted into the bedroom and demanded money from them. One of the suspects had a rifle. A struggle ensued, which led to the shooting of Roydes and Edwards.
Detectives learned that Hyatt drove the two intruders, who were later identified as Theio Manley and Michael Malloy, to the home to rob the victims.
Hyatt was arrested two days later.
Codefendants Michael Malloy and Theio Manley were arrested soon after that. They are charged with First Degree Murder, Attempted Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Conspiracy to
Commit Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury, First Degree Burglary, two counts of Cruelty to Animals, and two counts of
First Degree Kidnapping. Their charges are still pending.
