Warrant: Boy suffered major injuries from father’s knife attack
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A 1-year-old boy involved in a domestic disturbance with his father suffered such serious stab wounds that internal organs spilled out of his body according to an arrest warrant.
The warrant says the child says Batchelor used a kitchen knife to stab the boy through to the spinal cord causing his bowels “to erupt from the inside to the outside of the body and causing loss of spleen and kidney function.”
According to the warrant, the assault “resulted in permanent and protracted loss and impairment of any mental and emotional function of” the boy.
Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer said this afternoon the last update he had on the child’s condition was Friday, when the boy was listed as critical.
Neighbor Susan Beaudoin who lives across the street from the Batchelors’ home told WWAY today she was shocked by what happened.
“For two days I was in shock. I just could not believe that something this close to us could happen. It was horrific. It was just terrible,” Beaudoin said.
Beaudoin said David Batchelor seemed to be a great father to his two children from what she saw, though she said she did not know the family well, because she had moved to the neighborhood a few months ago.
“Normal, normal family. Ya know? Two kids, mom, dad. They get up. They go to school. They come home. Grandmother comes over. Just a completely normal family. And it was terrible to hear that that happened,” Beaudoin said.
Batchelor is in the New Hanover County Jail under $2.5 million bond charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury and intentional child abuse. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance tomorrow.
