WWAY’s Amanda Fitzpatrick speaks to Williston Middle School Girl P.O.W.E.R. Club

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Williston Middle School’s Girl P.O.W.E.R. (Princesses of Worth, Esteem and Respect) Club meets once a month to listen to guest speakers or take education field trips.

The group started earlier this year as a pilot program and has about 25 girls that participate.

On Thursday, WWAY Anchor Amanda Fitzpatrick spoke to the group about her career as a journalist and offered advice about how to achieve success in middle school and later in life.

When asked about what she learned from the event, 6th grader Promise Burton said, “Don’t care about what other people think of you. Just be yourself and be you, no matter what.”

Each girl in the club has a mentor to make sure her grades and behavior are on the right track.

The Williston Middle School Principal said overall behavior has improved for girls in the group.
