Nina and Pinta arrive in Port City
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Two tall ships arrived in Downtown Wilmington via the Cape Fear river just after noon on Wednesday.
The Nina and Pinta are here for public tours May 11-20, 2017. They are docked at Port City Marina adjacent to the Convention Center and PPD. The floating museums are replicas of Christopher Columbus’s ships during his transatlantic journeys and visit ports around the world with a mission of educating the public on the history of the ships.
“These were selected by Columbus to make four transatlantic voyages over a 12-year period to open up a new world that people pretty much didn’t think existed,” Captain Stephen Sanger said. “You know, a lot of people(at the time) thinking the world is flat and going out there and proving the world is round.” Sanger is captain of the Nina.
The public is encouraged to check out the ships through the 20th. Tickets are $8 Adults, $7 Seniors/Military, $6 children 5-16, Free children 4 and under. Organizers say group tours of 15 or more are available for school groups, museums, scouts, and camps for $5 per person but need to be booked in advance.
Tickets are available on Eventbrite and will also be on sale at Port City Marina on the days of the tours. Tours are May 11th – May 20th, 9AM to 6PM. Limited parking is available onsite for $5 per vehicle.
This event is brought to you by Wilmington Harbor Enhancement Trust (WHET) and Port City Marina.
