WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Paying for Wave transit could hit your wallet a little harder, even if you do not ride the bus. New Hanover County Commissioner Jonathan Barfield is looking for your help on how to fix yet another budget shortfall. Barfield says the importance of the Wave Transit system is sometimes underestimated.

In Barfield's eNewsletter sent out last week, he proposes two ideas on how to make ends meet for the transit system's financial shortfalls. One is a $7 vehicle registration fee. The other is a quarter-cent sales tax increase. Barfield says he does not support either revenue stream yet. He says his mission right now is to hear from the community on how they think the budget problem should be solved.

"I'll tell you that our ridership is extremely high," Barfield said. "We always get a lot of comments that people say they don't see people on the buses, but I think it depends on what time of the day you're looking at but also on the routes you're looking at, because our numbers are through the roof in terms of that."

Barfield says using the Wave buses is not only a great way to go green but also helps with the wear and tear of our roads. Today Barfield said another solution could be a fare hike, but many Wave riders we talked with today said they do not like that idea, because it would hit them hard.

Here we go again! More wealth re-distribution.

Instead of raising fares for people who USE the service, we'll raise taxes for those who have never ridden a WAVE bus in their life and likely never will.

People like Barfield and Padgett need to start wearing berets with red stars on them. They shouldn't even pretend that they're where they are for any purpose other than to wage class warfare.

Why do liberals hate user fees, the fairest of all funding mechanisms?

WAVE Transit

The best way for WAVE to combat the budget shortfall is to make it more rideable. The busses break down constantly, are almost ALWAYS late and are is deplorable condition, (i.e. dirty, seats ripped, drivers discourteous and rude, and favoritism shown towards certain riders (they can bring drinks and food, others can't).
Also, why don't UNCW students have to pay for the bus? They use it as do non-students, yet they ride free. If UNCW students ride free, why don't CFCC students get the same treatment?
My daughter rides the bus to CFCC downtown campus from Castle Hayne. The bus is breaking down often, is ripped and dirty rarely on time. The stops are often passed by without the driver even slowing down.
A bus system cannot expect to break even if the busses aren't reliable, on time or pleasant to ride. Only when WAVE corrects these problems should they even consider a rate increase or any other asistance. The current bus system is a severe black eye on the county.

Seahawks do not ride for free

I am not sure how much goes where- but I do know this

UNCW contracts with WAVE. UNCW students ride the WAVE (and the Seahawk) since undergraduates who live within a one mile radius of campus are not eligible to have a parking permit. It is most certainly NOT free. For an undergraduate student, the transportation allocation is 4.175% of MANDATORY fees. That is more than $800 for a full time student.

better direction with Brian Berger

WAVE, ABC, CFPUA-when is enough enough. Barfield is a tax and spend Democrat who can't say no. Caster and Catlin two guys who allowed or sat on hands during corruption at ABC and support CFPUA. We can transport ourselves in a better direction with Brian Berger-lets cut the waste at places like ABC and CFPUA and if we really do need more money for WAVE we should set priorities so that the County can live within its means--just like our families. Even for this Dem--A Reagan republican looks awful good compared to leadership mediocrity we have in County today.

clean house

WAVE TRANSIT NEEDS TO REPLACE THEIR DIRECTOR WHO MAKES ENTIRELY TOO MUCH SALARY REPLACE ALL THE BOARD MEMBERS FORM A CITIZENNS ADVISORY COMMITTEE LIKE OTHER CITIES AND REPLACE SOME EMPLOYEES AND CLEAN UP WAVE TRANSIT SYSTEM ALL THE WAY FROM STARTUP TO THE END OF THE LINE.
QUITE SURPRISED THAT COMMENTS ARE BEING PRINTED AGAIN AS FOR SOME TIME COMMENTS HAD STOPPED BEING PRINTED WHY WAS THIS HAPPENING AS AMERICANS ARE SUPPOSED TO HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH LET ME GUESS THE DIRECTOR AND BOARD MEMBERS OF WAVE TRANSIT COULD NOT TAKE THE HEAT FROM THE PUBLIC.
THEIR MEETINGS SHOULD BE TELEVISED AND ABLE TO BE VIEWED BY THE PUBLIC WHICH WAVE TRANSIT OBJECTS TO THIS.
