NAACP criticizes local school segregation

READ MORE: NAACP criticizes local school segregation
WILMINGTON -- They say New Hanover County's school system is still segregated. The NAACP has harsh criticisms over diversity in the county's three magnet schools. Members of the local chapter of the NAACP are demanding more diversity within the county's magnet schools. They say their concerns are not being taken seriously. New Hanover County NAACP Vice President Rev. Hudson Barksdale says the three magnet schools in New Hanover County are worse off now than before the school board re-drew district lines this year. The goal was to increase diversity in the county's elementary schools. Rev. Hudson said, "These magnet schools were designed to bring in whites, quite frankly, from suburban areas so we'd have a more diversified school system. The reality is that because of redistricting, the school board." "They have decided we are going to have segregated schools. They got their wish, the New Hanover County schools are segregated now." School Superintendent Al Lerch acknowledges the number of minority students in the three magnet schools remains virtually unchanged. He says the main reason is the lottery system, which filled the 100 spots per school in a random drawing. Next year the school system will use a weighted lottery, taking into account economic diversity, parents' education and where kids live. Lerch said, "That will allow us to attract more diversity. That's the whole goal. The goal is to attract diversity to the magnet schools." The un-weighted lottery won't happen until next year. The NAACP wants change now. "Sooner or later the same problems that plagued separate but equal is going to plague us. One of those problems was that resources were not equally allocated," Rev. Hudson said. At the last meeting he asked the school board for a meeting. But the board voted 5-to-2 against meeting with the NAACP, citing their policy of not meeting with any group. The NAACP has given the New Hanover County School Board until October 10 to sit down for a face-to-face meeting to discuss solutions to the problem. They say if they do not get a response by then, they will pursue another course of action.

NO, I do not think that if the slaves had been paid that the balance would be different. Think about this. If ALL white Americans forefathers owned slaves wouldn't we all be doing well economically? If that is the case why are there so many poor white people as well as poor people in general? NOT all of our white families had slaves, VERY few families owned them. Do some investigating and find their living relatives, sue them. Also, did you have any direct relatives that were slaves that you know of? You do know that not ALL blacks in America are slave decedents, right? A lot of black people were always free and came from other countries where their skin was black. I do not personally know of one family that owned slaves. Africans NEVER should have been brought here for any reason except on their own free will. NONE of you would want to live in Africa now, would you? That country still sucks. So many people starving, dying of AIDS, wars....and slavery amongst themselves. Until only a few hundred years ago, Greeks enslaved Greeks; Romans enslaved Romans and Africans enslaved Africans. African slave trade, which started in the 15th century, (BEFORE THE USA) was begun by the PORTUGUESE. Slavery among African tribes was common, as it was among the Native Americans that Columbus came across in Hispaniola. The biggest difference between native slavery and the slavery brought by Europeans to Africa and the Caribbean was the scope and scale. Do you know where Portugal is? It is beside Spain in Europe. Sue them.

Thanks..

But no thanks for your little history lesson. "If ALL white Americans forefathers owned slaves wouldn't we all be doing well economically? If that is the case why are there so many poor white people as well as poor people in general? NOT all of our white families had slaves, VERY few families owned them. Do some investigating and find their living relatives, sue them." No, they would not all be doing well economically because the wealth in this country is so concentrated now. To put it plainly, they more than likely lost it somewhere along the line to more financially savvy Americans. I understand that not EVERY white American owned slaves, but the vast majority enjoyed some of the things that free labor brought along(taxes from cotton, etc., with free labor = the non-slave holder getting the road paved in front of his/her house, which in turn finally enables you to start that dairy farm you always wanted=non-slaveholder benefiting from slavery) See how this works? "Also, did you have any direct relatives that were slaves that you know of? You do know that not ALL blacks in America are slave decedents, right? A lot of black people were always free and came from other countries where their skin was black." I don't have the slightest idea if any of my relatives were slaves. If not, I would not want any part of reparations. If so, i would add it to my child's education fund(which I'm sure her great great grandparents would want her to have). No rims or necklaces for me as some of you think all blacks would do with reparations. "I do not personally know of one family that owned slaves." Uh, ok. So you've gone through every family tree of everyone you know and know for a fact that not one of them owned slaves? This makes it hard for me to take you seriously. "That country still sucks. So many people starving, dying of AIDS, wars....and slavery amongst themselves." Again, you are making it hard for me to take you seriously. I see you went to the same elementary school as George Bush, Africa is a continent, not a country. "Until only a few hundred years ago, Greeks enslaved Greeks; Romans enslaved Romans and Africans enslaved Africans. Sue them." Have you even read any of the posts I have put up? I have no concern for what occurred in Greece, Portugal, Rome, nor Africa. I live in America.

last to lvd

I can not take you seriously on any point. The fact that you want to take money from the hard working AMERICAN common folk that have done you NO HARM makes you one self centered greedy individual. Where do you think all that cash would come from? Government does not segregate our tax dollars ya know. You keep squeezing that turnip. You have more chance of getting that blood than getting reparations from anyone in this country. It will be a cold day in hell. out.

Grandparents

Yeah, my grandparents did not participate in the internment of Japanese Americans, but paid money in the form of taxes for their reparations. As I have said before, if none of my ancestors were slaves, then i would **NOT** want payments because I have not been directly affected (sound like greed to you?). This statement, "You have more chance of getting that blood than getting reparations from anyone in this country. It will be a cold day in hell." only shows me the part of you that i wish you would have let out in the beginning instead of trying to hide your inner racist. OUT.

NAACP...come on now

Ok LVD. You've left the world of annoying and entered the world of just sounding stupid. A small, twisted part of me is starting to think blacks should be paid reparations. Then the world will just sit back and watch them blow the money on diamond earrings, rims, crack, and abortions. Wait, never mind...that last one doesn't fit this scenerio. Then I will mass-produce "I TOLD YOU SO" bumper stickers and make my fortune. It's so realistic it might just work!

"I think you or her should take that up with the people whom did it to her." Just as in your case I can not take it up with them because they are ALL dead. I do not hold a grudge nor do I complain about how they kept our family down. My Grandma never learned to read, write or spell. I never had a letter from her, nor did she ever sign one of my birthday cards she always had my Grandad do it. She never drove a car, read a book or news paper and she never once complained. On her own she ended up owning a hardware shop, running it and keeping her daughters in food while her husband was away in the war. Wonderful achievements for someone illiterate. BUT the difference between her and a lot of AA's is she had self confidence and drive. Why is it that a LOT of blacks do very well in life if whitey is keeping you ALL down? Your skin is the same color so it must be whats on the inside, why can't you see that?

In the past.....

Yes they were in the past, but ask yourself honestly, is forty years enough time to right wrongs that went on for FOUR HUNDRED years? The wealth of this country was built by my ancestors, and you get to reap the benefits from it. I know you're gonna give me the old 'my parents worked hard for what they had' but face it, it was built on the backs of my people. There will never be peace in race relations until that debt is payed. We paid the Japanese, the Jews, and everyone esle that was wronged, now it's time to pay the biggest debt owed. Oh, and let me cut to the chase to your response before you give it. 1. I don't live in Africa, so i am not looking for repairations from Africa. 2. Like a debt that your parents incurred, you have been passed along that debt. 3. Welfare is NOT a payment for slavery(there are more white people on welfare than any other people in America).

Shouldn't LVD be...

AT WORK? instead of sitting around waiting to collect a check he doesn't deserve? You might want those reparation checks to be made straight to Visa Card Corp. instead of your name.

REPARATIONS

LVD- this to you.If you truly feel that you are owed reparations for past injustices, then you need to demand them from the states that took the assets from the South by force. Go talk to the northern states; go talk to Illinois who refused entry to freed slaves,or Indiana, or Ohio. My ancestor's bought slave families and gave them freedom. Maybe you owe me!

LVD haha!

You keep talking about how we are reaping benefits for something that we did not do, as I see it you did not do anything yourself. Blacks have more rights than the whites do now. You talk of a debt that we owe, I don't owe a damn thing. Sounds like to me that you just want something out of it. You have a lot of hatred built up inside you against whites. It is people like you that cause so many problems. There is a lot of trash being talked that is whats wrong with our society. God says love everyone. LVD you sound crazy, keep putting your comments so we can really know how ignorant you are.

Amazing!!

Ok, i know there are some psychics out there, but how did you all come to the conclusion that i am broke/uneducated/lazy/driveless/ and whatever other afflictions that you all have come up with? I am a happily married father of one, and heres the kicker....I'm half white/black! I have people that i call aunts and uncles that have the same racist mindsets as you all do, so I know what you all are going to say before you say it. Heard that before. Reparations will come along because that is justice. I think I've said enough in this conversation. To see where the hate in this country originates from you need only to scroll through these posts directed at me to. I do not condone lazy shiftless blacks, nor close-minded white racists.

What the??

LVD You are half black/half white and 100% crazy. If you're half and half then half of your "forefathers" were the cause of the burden put upon the other half of your "forefathers". Keep on changing your story we're ready for you. Wouldn't one cancel the other out and, again, you wouldn't be owed one darn thing? Besides, unless you're around 150 years old, you never broke your back doing one thing for this country one way or the other. I'm not 150 years old either so I didn't own any of your people (or the race you seem to claim one minute) Maybe you need to get your own life and soul right before it's too late.

educate yourself

http://www.mindfully.org/Reform/2004/Slave-Reparations-Dropped27jan04.ht... also: "The other side of the coin" Reparations for slavery are opposed by the majority of Americans and some of the most outspoken are black conservatives such as Professor Walter Williams. Opponents of reparations all agree that slavery was a terrible violation of human rights and dignity, but Professor Williams in the online Capitalism Magazine questioned, "What moral principle justifies forcing a white of today to pay a black of today for what a white of yesteryear did to a black of yesteryear?" In the past, reparations have been paid directly to victims, as was the case with Japanese-Americans who were relocated to internment camps during World War II. The United States government paid $20,000 in reparations to each of the 60,000 survivors in 1988. The state of Israel (on behalf of Jewish Holocaust victims who had settled in Israel) and the Claims Conference (on behalf of Jewish victims who had relocated to places other than Israel) received reparations from the German government after the Second World War. Recipients of reparations should be "the direct victims of the injustice or their immediate families," author David Horowitz stated in his book, Uncivil Wars: The Controversy Over Reparations for Slavery. Both Williams and Horowitz note that whites weren't the only ones who benefited from slavery. In his book, Horowitz claims that on average "American blacks enjoy per capita incomes in the range of 20 to 50 times those of blacks living in any of the African nations from which they were kidnapped." Williams contends, "Had there not been slavery, and today's blacks were born in Africa instead of the United States, we'd be living in the same poverty that today's Africans live in and under the same brutal regimes." Opponents of reparations argue that the majority of Americans were not slave owners and even in the South, only one in five owned slaves. Also, hundreds of thousands of white Union soldiers died to free the slaves in the Civil War. Therefore, reparations have already been paid and there is no debt. In addition, many Americans today have no connection to slavery at all since they immigrated here after 1865. Reparations opponents say that the gap among blacks and whites today is not caused by the legacy of slavery, but by other socioeconomic factors. Shelby Steele, author of A Dream Deferred, whose grandfather was a slave, believes that reparations are just another form of victimization. "The demand for reparations is yet another demand for white responsibility when today's problem is a failure of black responsibility," Steele asserted in a Newsweek opinion piece, titled, A Childish Illusion of Justice." Thank you

LVD, are you frickin crazy?

LVD, are you frickin crazy? Do you read the news? Do you have any idea what state Africa is in now? The poverty, the squalor, the violence? Do you have ANY idea what you are talking about at all? I think YOU are the one who needs educating pal.

Amen!

Amen! And very well said, Sensible! Also, LVD, I had no forefathers here when slavery was going on and you may not have either.

naacp

They are very good at complaining about everything, very poor at helping to solve anything, and excellent at having the taxpayer pay for things they want.
