With a smoking ban under consideration at Wrightsville Beach, many people wonder if the town could even enforce such an ordinance. So what is legal? What's not? And where?
At Wrightsville Beach the line in the sand is drawn at high tide. It's called the 1939 Line, which defines town property from the dunes to the high water mark.

Wrightsville Beach is one step closer to enforcing a smoking ban. During a special meeting Thursday, the Wrightsville Beach Board of Aldermen unanimously voted to put the ban to a public vote.

The push for a smoking ban in Wrightsville Beach has fired up again. After the Board of Aldermen voted against a ban, supporters of the ban are bringing the issue back to the table.

The debate on whether to ban smoking continued tonight at the Wrightsville Beach Board of Aldermen meeting. Supporters of the ban got one step closer to reaching their dream of a butt free beach. A group supporting the smoking ban presented the board with a stack of signed petitions.

Although a smoking ban in Wrightsville Beach was snuffed out a month ago, the fight is not over yet.
Supporters of the ban say they are sick of butts on the beach, so they found a loophole in town law to revive their cause.

North Carolina's capital city may join the thousands of people with resolutions to stop smoking. The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that Raleigh's city council is scheduled to discuss an ordinance Tuesday that would ban smokers from city parks.
