Parents take son out of school over controversial book

READ MORE: Parents take son out of school over controversial book
WILMINGTON -- A book on a local ninth grade reading list has some parents so upset, they took their son out of school. The book, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, was an option for students to read in a freshman English class at Ashley High School. It was among the American library association's most challenged books of 2006. Now the book is being challenged here in New Hanover County. "this book is the most graphic book i've seen as a student book." As Chuck and Wendy Strafford read through The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky they couldn't believe it was being taught in their son's high school freshman English class. Chuck said, "There's millions and millions of good books out there, literature books, that are cleaner." The coming-of-age tale told from the perspective of a high school boy has sparked controversy nationwide. The book goes into detail about drugs, alcohol, gay sex, date rape and other topics the Straffords say would be better off in more advanced classes -- not for 15-year-old students like their son Elijah. "We're trying to keep him protected and sheltered in a healthy, clean environment and keeping him so he's innocent," Wendy said. Elijah's teacher, Christy McCoy, gave students the option of reading a different book, but the Strafford's say he was absent the day she made that announcement and was under the impression he had to read this book. New Hanover County Schools Spokesperson Valita Quattlebaum said, "The book will go through the school's media advisory committee and it will be reviewed there. Then the book will go on further to the district's media advisory committee to be reviewed at that time. And after that takes place a decision will be made whether or not the book will be allowed to remain on the school's shelves." The Straffords say they've had to sign permission slips so their kids could take sex-ed courses, and even watch certain movies. They say they would have liked to be notified in the same manner about this book. Wendy said, "We should, with literature, especially with that graphic of a nature, be told as parents, not let the kids have that choice since they are minors." The Straffords, along with another concerned parent, met with the principal and their son's English teacher and say they couldn't reach any sort of agreement. They took Elijah out of Ashley for the time being and say they hope this eventually blows over. They say they aren't trying to get the book banned; they simply would have liked to have gotten a heads up about its graphic nature.

Aaaaah, the computers.

They won't put all our letters in. I believe computers might be out to get us. Letter taking computers. They must be stopped!

must be the keyboard

Yep, you must have the old keyboard that only has 18 letters on it. Good try to cover the fact you didn't proof read or spell check your statement.

I don't really take the time to use all the proper punctation or whatever all right. Plus I DON'T CARE WHAT U PPL SAY ABOUT MY COMMENT U CAN GET OVER IT. Not to mention I don't really like proofreading unless its for something extremley important for school. So get out of my face u stupid *bleep* face.

Attacking a teenager for

Attacking a teenager for having a good relationship with a teacher and calling her "sad" is not an effective way to voice your opinions. I suppose you support banning the book; you probably also would support free and independent thinking as long as it agrees with you. Otherwise, tear down the opposition with trite insults! How very mature of you.

The grammar and spelling in this students post is a SAD reflection on the overall education they are receiving in NHC. The post would make a good argument for home or private school.

As a high school English teacher, those of you who think that a student's grammar is directly linked to teachers are sadly mistaken. We try, but students need to take responsibility for their learning as well. We can not force them to learn, to be in attendance, to do their work. The best part is that parents are making excuses for their children, which in turn leads to their lacking education. When you enable a child, what do you teach them? A perfect example is this story. Their son was absent, but why didn't they question it right away? If they had a problem, they should've spoken with the teacher in advance. If they didn't, then they have a losing case in their advocacy of "protecting" their child. My guess is that this kid didn't do well on the assessment, then brought the issue to the parents, who are obviously not as involved in their child's life as they say they are. In addition, don't believe everything you read or hear. I know for a fact that the news hasn't covered the whole story, or in the very least, they haven't "told" the whole story.

Everybody get Footloose

Whats next? are kids ging to be banned from dancing and listening to that devil induced rock n roll music? Are we that small town featured in "Footloose"? If you have not read this book in its entirety then please do not comment on it!

I'm getting old!

You're showing your age scally! The sad thing is, I remember Footloose too, and was old enough to understand the message in it. I think we're on the verge of getting old. I would love to read the book, maybe I'll understand what the parents are mad about. Sometimes, as we have seen, the school system doesn't always make the right choices for our children, so we as parents have to stay on top of things.

Learn to spell!! You should

Learn to spell!! You should be concerned about spelling. If Ms McCoy was such a great teacher your spelling should be better!!!

Give Me A Break!

You-all actually think Miss McCoy were writing these comments. Give me a break! Unlike all of you (NEGATIVE) commenters, Miss McCoy has a life. So I'd like to say that this is an actual fifteen year old girl who actually THINKS, and an opinion and a voice. Contrary to popular belief, not all teenagers are sex-obsessed morons. Maybe you're just putting these things up because you're upset about what your kids are doing behind your backs. They're not so much your "innocent darlings". Think about that next time you want to scream and yell about a book. Next time, think before you speak. Merci, and vous-baiser! -Lexi.

yes, I can tell u r 15 by

yes, I can tell u r 15 by your grammer! I hope you continue in school to improve that!

Too Funny

"u r"? owie! Yew mite wanna see bout one of dem dere edumakations urself!Dur! Well, I will give you credit Guest 123,you CAN count to 3! Go You! ::polite golf applause::

Mrs.Mccoy gave us and option to read another book so elijah had that option and the straffords are trying to have the book banned we all know they want this book banned

the perks of being a wallflower

I am a 14 year old female who is in Miss.McCoy's class. I am currently reading this book and i think its great. I dont understand why parents are making such a big deal about the book "The Perks of being a Wallflower". It has no "ponagraphy", "gay sex", or anything about encouaging us to "use drugs". I think the situation is totally going out of hand. I mean everybody knew that you had a choice to read this book. I think its ridiculous that they are making such a big deal about the book. If the parents would have actually read the book instead of scanned out parts, they would probably understand the book and notice what the book is about. If the parents are looking out for their son, maybe they should not involve other students and their parents. GO LOOK AT MYSPACE AND SEE WHAT A BIG DEAL YOUR SON MADE OF IT! And know their is a rumor about a teacher writing those comments. Let me advise you she didnt!! Students in my class and others are very mad and concerned why would parents make such a big deal about the book. And all we are doing is exspressing are feelings on what we think, and last time I checked we are in "HIGH SCHOOL" things worse go around everyday and just because we are teenagers dosent mean we are "STUPID" as you say we are. Some of us actually know how to use proper grammer, other than "Ponagraphy" and also to conclude why would you try to take away all of our books. We love the book, and just because a students parent makes a big deal out of nothing, dosent mean we should get our books taken away! Logan Deans =]

book and mrs Mccoy

MY NAME IS TRAVIS KEYS AND I'AM IN MRS.Mccoy's class Mrs.Mccoy is a good teacher and i think that the elijah's family should apologize for what they said about Mrs.Mccoy she is not a child pornagrahier or whatever Mrs.Wendy called her this book is a good book and im glad this book wont get banned because it is a good book

I don't understand why

I don't understand why people are talking about this teacher being a liberal. This book has nothing to do with being a liberal it has to do with living in America. We as parents need to face the facts, this is what is happening in our society like it or not. I have a ten year old and I personally would let him read this book when he gets to High School. Yes i truly beleive you need to shelter and protect your children. But our children are going to learn it somewhere down the line. So instead of acting like our kids are so innocent and we are great christians. Why not teach them right from wrong. That's the job of a parent, not embarrassing our children in front of local TV and his friends. I would be ashamed as a parent to do this to my child.

The perks of being a wallflower

I am a 17 year old female who is currently reading this book in Miss McCoys first period english class. My mom read this book before i did and she absolutely LOVES it! It has NO "ponography" or "Beastiality"! If the parents would have really read this book instead of just skimming through it then maybe they would know the truth, and if the parents didn't want their innocent little angel to read this book then he had a choice to read another one! Now yall need to leave this alone and STOP trying to take my book away from me! I LOVE THIS BOOK!

He needs to learn it somewhere

Often times children can not talk about how they feel or what they are experiencing in their daily life. Parents do not want to talk about issues like these so they are often avoided. If the parent does not talk about it then where are they going to learn how to react when they are appoached with situations found in most books that are challenged. Books are ways for children to learn these things rather than not knowing. It is a fact of life, children of his age need to know things that they are reading in books or being face to face with. It is their way of learning new things that his parents will not talk about. I am sure that many of you will shocked to look at the banned books list and discover that you read most of these books as a child in school and never had a problem with them. It was how you discovered things. This link is the top 100 most challenged books, check it out and see what you think:

Ms. McCoy---- What is your

Ms. McCoy---- What is your response?

anyone parent whos student

anyone parent whos student goes to Ashley High School wishing to discuss further this situation can email other concerned and outraged parents at We as parents need to stand up for our children. This book goes against everything I've taught my child as wrong even talks about stuff we've never covered!!!! Any parent reading this book who has no problem with their child reading it should not be a parent!! Read the book SEE what your child is reading! I would be ashamed to read this book with my peers and teacher much less read it aloud like the teacher did and then discuss it ??? What is she thinking????

you all are taking this out

you all are taking this out of hand. All of the personal attacks on an excellent english teacher is absurd once you realize that our world isnt so pure and innocent then mabey you people will get some sanity i think that this is rediculous and even less mature than us teenagers i know that when im a parent im not going to be as insane and obssesive as you people. ...15 year old student who thinks you parents are CRAZYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

uh what

Hello maybe you should realize that this is the only kind of book that teenagers like me will read. But it seems to me that you parents are too stupid to understand that your sweet, pure, and innocent children are actually doing things just like in this book.

WTF is your problem

how are gonna keep him protected and sheltered in a healthy clean environment in todays world that will never happen and the book is actually really good if you sit down and read and not just mark the pages and mrs. mccoy is a great english teacher im glad she gave us that book to read

Perks of Being a Wallflower

Just having looked at this book, I can't believe it was assigned by an English teacher! Content aside, it is just bad literature, period. Was this a lower-level class? That it is published by MTV Books should give you a clue to its literary merit. Why are public schools allowing pop books onto the curriculum? I wonder which great work of literature was booted from the reading list to make room for this kind of trash.

Dude you seriously need

Dude you seriously need help, cause that book freaking rocks. Some parents are just afraid to expose the truth to their child. well too bad moms and dads you can't protect them forever. so just get over it. let them make their own mistakes

You just admitted your own

You just admitted your own ignorance, "Just having looked at this book", looked implying that you have never read it,yet you still feel the need to comment on it and, "That it is published by MTV Books should give you a clue to its literary merit", accually it was a 2000 ALA winner for young adult literature, a fact that this "news" station failed to report. Futhermore, this is a wonderful novel told from the point of view of an emotioally tramatized 15- year old high school Freshman who observes and reports his world through a series of letters to an unknown person. Charlie does see people drinking and using drugs, he sees rape and domestic violence, however all are told through the view of this emotinally stunted young man. While he does do drugs, both accidently and intentually, he does not condone such behavior. These actions all lead up to the reveal of the source of his trama and why he is so emotionally stunted. Honestly this novel is a modern Catcher in the Rye, only not as kinky. I think that it is ridiculous that people have claim graphic gay sex and bestiality, because there is no such thing in the novel! There is a gay character, he is a friend of Charloie and it is mentioned that he is having sex with his boyfriend, however there is no description of the act beyond the mention of his friend being the domanate. Charlie is a remarkable innocent character and his world is realistic, so to those that think this is smut, you should take a look at the work around you, educate your kids on how to exist--with the morals that you what them to have-- within our world. High School students are bright, functioning human beings, give them some credit and give the school some credit for trying to deal with this in a reasonable mannor. This is a great novel and I would support anyone teaching it.

excuse me hahaha your just being stupid this book is the best book ever and just because its published by MTV doesn't mean anything. Oh and for your information all the classes in ms.McCoys are reading this and u saying that everyone reading it must be stupid haha think again

Looking isn't reading. Did you read it? Have you spent time with teenagers lately? Getting them to read is difficult and this is a book that most of them are interested in. What classic would you suggest having them read? Something that goes way over their head and bores them to death? I would much rather them read something they can relate to and that will perhaps spark their interest in further reading.

From Mayflower to Wallflower....Think about it....

Shame on you

Who are you trying to fool here? The media offers us this way for us to speak our minds about this important topic, and you, pretending to be a 15 year old student, are just fooling yourself. It is too obvious that teenagers do not express themselves in that manner much less write like that, unless they are already English teachers......
