Search continues for Creekwood killers

READ MORE: Search continues for Creekwood killers

Wilmington police are still looking for two men who killed a woman outside a Creekwood apartment building on Labor Day. In the meantime, some Creekwood residents are wondering how safe is their neighborhood. Despite the recent murder in Creekwood there are safety measures in place to keep residents safe. Alfreda McDonald, a resident of Creekwood said, “It was a tragic thing that happened and prayerfully it was isolated, we just don't know yet.” McDonald has lived in the Creekwood neighborhood for ten years. “Not only was the victim's family affected but the residents and children of Creekwood were affected,” said McDonald. Residents said surveillance cameras don't work. McDonald chairs the Residents' Safety Committee. She said despite Monday's murder and broken security cameras, there are still procedures in place to protect her neighbors. For instance, I.D. badges are required for all residents 10 years of age or older “Whenever there is a crowd and the police are called out, and they need to find out who is who...they will ask the residents for their id's,” said McDonald. McDonald said people who do not have badges and can not verify their reason for being in the neighborhood, could be arrested for trespassing. McDonald said, “People just run to Creekwood it's not the residents. It's people not from this community that do their drug selling.” Residents hold monthly safety meetings, and McDonald said a community watch will be reformed. Police patrols are also frequent in the area. McDonald said despite the recent problems, Creekwood still has it good points. “Come out meet the people, and if you want to volunteer some time and get to know these people, because it's a wonderful group of people out here,” said McDonald. Police are still investigating Crutchfield’s murder. If anyone has information they should call the Wilmington Police Department.

Why does Creekwood need volunteers?

What kind of argument is that? "Gee, Creekwood's a great place - come volunteer and you'll see." Why, oh why, does Creekwood need volunteers at all? My neighborhood doesn't "need volunteers." Forest Hills doesn't "need volunteers." Winter Park doesn't "need volunteers." What exactly would Creekwood volunteers do? Get you over your reluctance to work with the police? Teach you to understand that criminal behavior is not simply another personality quirk? Why can't Creekwood straight itself out, and clean up its own mess? More convenient victim mentality. "We need outsiders to come in and help us....but this is a great place to live!" Time to start helping yourselves. No one can clean up Creekwood BUT Creekwood. You'll know you're making progress when the drug dealers are afraid to come around because they know you'll turn them in.

One Clear Solution

Give 48 hours notice to Creekwood residents to get themselves/items out. Then line up as many CAT D10 dozers you can side by side by side and bulldoze the whole place. Just turn the dozers loose and go straight until it's completely leveled. That the only way to fix the problem.

The Dog Pound

No one should have to live in such drug and crime infested area such as Creekwood. But what the city and law enforcement do not want you to know is this... Lets just keep the projects like Creekwood so atleast we can keep those people where we know where they are.. Besides you don't want them living in your neighborhood do ya? Creekwood is a disgrace and for all the high society people that turn their nose up should join together for a solution, since this is the Greater Wilmington area... and do something. I live at the beach I do what I can for the homeless and other needs in the local area. I can not imagine having to rely on the govt for a short time period and knowing my children had to live in a place like that until I got back on my feet. Hell a refuge camp looks better than that place. God would have to come down himself for me to find any hope in that place. The Housing department is a failure at this moment with a three year waiting period for assistance. Wilmington should have held someone accountable along.....time ago...lets not mention the hateful people that work at the housing dept. in our Great Wilmington. Next time I see some high society person from Landfall wanting a pat on their back someone should show them a picture of Creekwood and when they would like to volunteer out there....

Barney, thy guilt runneth over

Maybe YOU feel some misguided obligation to "find a solution for Creekwood," but I assure you that I (and most sane people) do not. Only Creekwood can find a solution for Creekwood.

Where can I sign up to drive

Where can I sign up to drive one, Ill so a little community service

she was a undercover

she was a undercover cop........ they sent her out there to get some drugs and it went bad that what i think creek wood is good place but it is just the people who do no stay out there and i stay out there.

Reply to tom

She was not an undercover cop. She is an addict, who sadly got murdered over drugs. The only thing that comes with drug addicts is either DEATH or PRISON. May she rest in peace now. Her addiction is over. American

What facts...

do you have to validate your statement that she was an undercover cop? And no, Creekwood is not a nice place, imo.

Residents

Residents like Alfreda McDonald have been in Creekwood longer than 10 years. Work took me into Creekwood as far back as 1991, and she was there, and so were many others that have "grown up" in the housing authority system. They use this as a means to live on the taxpayers dime, and not as what it was intended for, assistance to get back on your feet. WHA needs to evict everyone that has been there longer than 2 years, and have the police and sheriff's office in there with them when they serve the papers and force people out. That is the only way it will work. The next wave of citizens that moves in are screened and sign a contract that expires 2 years later from move in, and then they are gone. This will cause a gradual change in the element that is there. One from permanent residents to one where people that are there need it, and then they move on to a better life. I have seen Ms. McDonald in the street being the "voice" of the residents against the police, against the fire department, against EMS, etc.

Handout

She is probably against everything but a handout that is financed by the taxpayer.

crime map

from 23rd st to kerr MLK to market the star news crime map shows over 100 outstanding arrest warrants why???? residents STAND UP FOR GODS SAKE or has all the easy living taken your will?? i guess if you don't have to be responsible for yourself or your family or the place you are GIVEN to live. integrity means nothing to you either

Where did you get your information?

Where did you get your information regarding the 100 outstanding warrants? I would love to research that further.

crime map info

i did a count on the star news crime map the information is provided by wpd look under crime news

WPD's website...

Hey thanks for the information! Have you checked out the wanted/outstanding warrants page? It lists a lot of HUD funded addresses. Check it out!

wpd/crime map

it's amazing that they (wpd / wha) will not do anything to arrest or clean up the trash that stays their or lives their. i guess it's to much trouble. on a nother note., i e-mailed the cheif of police on wway's web site "ask the cheif " and asked point blank what was going to be done for the publics safety? that was the day after the shooting and i have not received anything back. not even; hey, we are not going to answer this question. nothing. i guess thats another useless local goverment project that sounded good to start but became inconveniant when people asked real questions and expect real answer.

Drug dealers only go where they make money (selling drugs). The police cannot do much when residents allow unauthorized people to live in their homes, won't report this or other illegal activity, and allow their sons, husbands, and boyfriends to deal drugs. While working in prison, some of the young men talked about the fact that their mothers allowed them to sell drugs as long as they didn't bring guns into the home. In exchange, the mothers were given money and jewelry. Until the residents stop tolerating illegal activity and/or participating in it and until they begin reporting these activities, nothing will change. I'm sure that calls can be made confidentially to the police. But the police can't do anything if they don't get reports or support from the residents.

Creekwood South

Yes, Creekwood South as the potential to be a nice community. We need everyone's help though including the WPD, WHA, and the citizens of Creekwood South in order to achieve this goal. I do not want to be ashamed to say I live in Creekwood. Please ya'll help take back our community.

10 years in Creekwood

I wish someone would pay my living expenses for 10 years. At some point it becomes a handout instead of a hand up. IMO, Creekwood just breeds more of the same type of people that become dependent on government. The killer(s) are probably kicked back in one of the air conditioned units, on their cell phone or computer game, eating food paid for with stamps and waiting to hit the streets again to make some pocket money during the early morning hours. I'm sure I'll be called racist and cold hearted but that's ok, I support myself and my family with no government handout. I work for a living.

crime in the projects

AMEN SOMEONE FOR ONCE HAS A BRAIN. IAM SO SICK OF DRIVING THROUGH THESE NEIGHBORHOODS AND HAVING BUMBS STANDING ON THE CORNERS AND WALKING OUT IN FRONT OF YOU IN THE STREET. EVERYONE OF THOSE PROJECTS SHOULD BE TORE DOWN AND FORGOTTEN BECAUSE IAM WITH YOU THEY NEED TO WORK FOR A LIVING. THEY THINK SOMEBODY OWES THEM ALL S.THE TIME. GIVE SOMETHING BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY AND STOP ABUSING THE SYSTEM. GET A JOB.THATS WHY I RAISE MY KIDS OUT OF CITY LIMITS AND IAM A SINGLE MOM THAT DOES WORK AND GETS NO HELP FROM THE SYSTEM. I WISH I COULD BUT THERES NOTHING LEFT FROM PEOPLE LIKE WHAT WE SEE IN THESE PROJECTS. BIG USERS AND THE SYSTEM IS AT JUST AS MUCH FAULT AS THESE FOLKS LETTING THEM BE USER

CREEKWOOD...

CREEKWOOD HAS ALWAYS BEEN A BLACK HOLE AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE A BLACK HOLE. PEOPLE KNOW WHO THE PREDATORS IN CREEK WOOD ARE, SOME LIVE IN AND SOME LIVE OUT. MOST OF THE REAL GANGSTAS OF CREEKWOOD ARE DEAD, JAIL, OR HAVE TAKEN ALL THE MONEY THEY MADE AND MOVED. THE PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN CREEKWOOD ALLOW THE BENEFITS TO BECOME A CRUTCH. ALOT OF THE RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN THERE FOR 10 - 20 SOME EVEN 30 YRS. ORIGINALLY I DONT THINK THAT WAS THE PLAN. IT WAS A PROJECT, JUST TO SEE IF THEY COULD GET SOME OF THE PEOPLE OFF MARKET INTO ONE REMOTE AREA. BECAUSE THEY HAD BIG PLANS FOR MARKET, SO THEY ISOLATED THE PEOPLE TO CREEKWOOD AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS. THINK ABOUT THIS LOOK AT WHAT THEY DID TO JERVAY AND TO TAYLOR HOMES... THATS WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE TO CRREKWOOD ALONG TIME AGO.. A PROJECT THAT JUST DIDNT WORK.. ~BEEN THERE DONE THAT~

please may I have another 10?

guestoff........I AGREE 10000000%. Sick of the leaches and dregs of society. NO ONE should be allowed to live free for 10 years. GET A JOB and the education to make more than minimum wage. Speak properly, teach your children to LOVE others, SHOW them love and compassion and stop letting the streets raise them. You get what you give. That place should be flattened and the freeloaders sent packing.

Judge Not: Especially in Creekwood

First, no one in creekwood or any other public housing is living for free. Everyone pays rent. Secondly, you should get to know the children and residents in the neighborhood before judging them. They are hardworking citizens in our community who do right by themselves as well as their families everyday. Those who live for extended lengths time in public housing are typically are elderly or disabled or are those who have long term care for children, but are not, repeat, not the rule, but the exception. but lastly, it is my wish that their be a Christian on this blog at some point who can see the worth in all communities, the worth in all people, and the worth in wanting the best in all we can do to be the best for our success. All I have seen here is "I don't want to pay for..." "Raze this.." and judgements etc. When we turn our backs on our fellows, we turn our backs on God. I don't believe we have to do for others what they can do for themselves, but when you judge someone or a place without understanding or knowledge or you lump everyone in to a category so heartlessly, it is just downright bigotry and evil. I pray that everyone will fight for this community the same way they would fight for any community that has struggles and problems.

Creekwood

informed said "When we turn our backs on our fellows, we turn our backs on God" First off, the thugs, druggies & murderers in Creekwood are not my fellows. They would rob, carjack and murder me as fast as lightning if given the chance, NOT my type of fellows. Secondly, last time I heard god was not living in Creekwood off the taxpayers money. god has nothing to do with this. If he did he would remove the "decent" folks then flatten that place himself.

Turning our backs on God?

Nowhere in the Bible does God instruct us to care for the lazy or accept our brother's criminal behavior as a valid occupation. God helps those who help themselves. If you live in Creekwood, or any of the thousands of places like Creekwood that are a blight on this nation, there are two ways to help yourself. The first way is that you realize you are capable of better things than barely scraping by on handouts from nanny government, and motivate yourself to improve your life and get out of there. Hundreds of thousands of successful, productive members of society have done exactly that. Keep your pants zipped, your nose in a textbook, and the drugs out of your body, and you'd be amazed what you can accomplish. The second way out is to pick up a gun, deal drugs, rob local merchants and eventually hit it big, living in a big mansion and driving that fancy car. Oh, but it never does seem to end that way. Instead, you wind up dead on the street or rotting away in Raleigh Central. Now you tell me which of those two alternatives God prefers? Jesus may have forgiven the thief at Calvary, but he didn't live next door to him for years and turn a blind eye to his thievery.

But for the grace of God go I

There is a want of compassion here. A want of Christ in all that is said here. A want of love. A want of respect. A want of neighbors helping neighbors. A want of all that our Christ Jesus teaches. That is all and that simply is.

Informed, you left one

Informed, you left one out.. "A want of personal responsibility" Compassion, love and respect do absolutely nothing for the residents of Creekwood, when they will not apply those things to the rest of their community by acting to clean up their environment. All the love in the world cannot help those who will not help themselves.

Simply ignorant

Ignorance is not an insult, it is a state of not knowing. You are very ignorant to suppose that their is a want of personal responsibility in this neighborhood. The facts just do not support your thesis. In fact, while the residents do not get on camera (stupid in any neighborhood) and talk about gang members, there is not a DA or an officer that is not well informed, there is not a night when there are not residents watching out for each other and their kids, there is a community garden, community activities, regular meetings about the schools, safety, residential programming, job availabiltiy, training programs, upward bound experiences etc etc etc. This is a vibrant and responsive neighborhood that is active. You don;t know because you don't want to know and you don't want to think better of it. It is like assuming things about landfall or figure eight or kings grant. If you don't live it, you don't know it, but you can think it up. What good does it do? Why not act with love and compassion and see the good and help and look to supporting those things that hurt us all in every community? What is wrong with you that makes being supportive of people? What is so wrong in your life that you have to point out at a whole group of others so arrogantly. LOVE brother, Love...and be of help. Be of Support. Be encouraged and be encouraging...repeat the prayer of St. Francis until you understand it and live it!

Speaking of

Speaking of ignorance...please explain to me why, if this community is such a happy, joyous, closeknit group, why there is still so much violence and illicit activity? You "assume" that I personally do not wish better for that community. THAT is an ignorant statement. You "assume" that I have not spoken personally with law enforcement officers of my aquaintence about this and other troubled areas in formulating my opinion. THAT is an ignorant conclusion. Because I do, and I have. You are not being honest; not with us, or with yourself. And that, above anything else, is harmful to the very community you are trying to defend. Open your eyes, and cut the sermon garbage.

more assumptions and ignorance

Again you mis state my positions to suit your own agenda. No one ever said that there was "a happy, joyous, closeknit group" exclusively or otherwise nor did I or anyone suggest that there was not major issues to be dealt with. Seeing the positive, not making blanket, prejudicial assumptions does not negate the possibility of there to be negative. I simply sought to point out the positive and seek allies in bein supportive and affirming of this and all our communities. period. I would still posit that you are not informed based on your postings and that you most certainly have not made an attempt to do something or share something positive. But it is never to late. The only garbage here would be the missed opportunity for you to show love and compassion for your fellows and pray, act, and be about the best for your neighbors...all of them!
