The Natural Resources Defense Council released its annual water quality report today. The survey looks at 200 popular beach spots nationwide.
Of the six rated locally, one scored significantly lower than the others.

Despite a looming eviction, the Beach House Marina in Surf City is still home to a few tourist attractions. The owners of the Belle of Topsail and the Pirate Ship Raven say they won't be leaving town anytime soon.

Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the arrest of Nell Marie Griffin, 34, of 140 Douglas Drive, Holly Ridge; she is charged with one count of embezzlement by an insurance agent.

If you are a gardener there are probably lots of weeds that top your list as being among the world’s worst. Plants like crabgrass and chamber bitter come to mind. One of the world’s worst is cogongrass, which was recently found in North Carolina for the first time near Burgaw.

A marina in Surf City is closing, but the tenants are not the only ones affected. As the Pender-Topsail News & Voice was first to report, Wells Fargo, which owns Surf City Beach House Marina, delivered the news to people who keep their boat there yesterday.

According to the Highway Patrol, a couple was driving toward Jacksonville on NC 53, when a deer ran into the road and hit them. The deer then catapulted off the couple's car, and into the windshield of another car that was traveling the opposite way.
