Whiteville fires police chief

In a news release, City Manager Larry Faison said Jerry Britt "was separated from city employment as a result of violations of the City’s Personnel Policy Article VII: Leaves of Absence and Article IX: Unsatisfactory Performance related to incapacity, unable to meet work standards and a pattern of failing to report to work."

Shooting victim's brother says attackers caught on camera

videoYellow tape surrounded the Columbus County home today where deputies say two men were shot and one died last night. The brother of the surviving victim, who was one of the first to arrive after the shooting, says he knows who did it and caught them on camera.

Deputies investigating murder near Tabor City

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has not yet provided any details from an autopsy conducted late this morning on Lee Travis Wright. Law Enforcement can now release, however, that Wright was apparently shot once in the chest.

Whiteville alum Tommy Greene moves on after injuries cut career short

Tommy Greene is happy. Which doesn't sound like a remarkable statement until you consider that when he was just 26 years old, the big right-hander went 16-4 with a 3.42 ERA for an underdog Phillies team in 1993 that made it all the way to the World Series. He started 30 games that magical season. His future seemed unlimited.

Whiteville's only movie theater may close if it does not convert to digital

videoOne of the oldest movie theaters in North Carolina faces an ultimatum; convert to digital, or close. It's the only movie theater in Whiteville, but it may soon shut its doors. Cinema 3 opened in 1928, and has been entertaining generations ever since. But new technology might force it out of business.

Detectives investigating murder-suicide in Tabor City

video Two people are dead in Columbus County after what investigators say was a murder-suicide. The Columbus County Sheriff's Office says it was called to Spivey Road near Tabor City around 8:30 a.m. after the three children who live here could not make contact with their parents.

SBI investigates after alleged assault on a Sheriff's Deputy

A man was arrested in Columbus County after allegedly assaulting a Sheriff's Deputy. According to investigators, Brandon Hamer grabbed Deputy Scott Collins around the throat and neck while Collins was trying to arrest Hamer for carrying a concealed handgun.

video When you look at Katie Diehl and Madison Hammonds talking with one another, you'd think they're old friends. In a way...they are. Madison is an eighth grade student at Central Middle School and though she likes eighth grade, she really loved seventh grade. That's because Mrs. Diehl was her teacher.
