WWAY's Wednesday night sports - April 9; Ashley baseball & softball takes flight

videoThe Screaming Eagles are looking fantastic this season in both baseball and softball. We checked out action on Wednesday from Ashley involving Topsail and Ashley High. In college baseball UNCW and East Carolina both won. In fact the Pirates picked up a non-conference victory against NC State.

Former Hoggard punter still getting a kick at NC State

videoPunters typically don't get as much respect and notoriety as other players on a football team, but when you need to punt it sure helps to have a good one. Hoggard graduate Wil Baumann is the NC State punter. WWAY recently made the trip to Raleigh in order to catch up with Baumann. He currently ranks third in school history in career punts with one more season left of eligibility.

WWAY's Monday night sports - April 7

videoThe Hoggard girls soccer team continues to dominant their conference opponents this season. We were there for Hoggard's victory over West Brunswick on Monday. The Columbus County School Board met on Monday. We're told Kyle Hutchison's name was submitted to the board in order for Hutchison to take over the football program at South Columbus High.

Former Laney swimmer earns honorable mention All-American status

The 2014 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship concluded on Saturday night. Laney graduate Stephen Coetzer earned honorable mention All-American status for his performance in the 200 backstroke. Coetzer is a junior at NC State. As a team NC State finished in 15th at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship. That was the highest finish among the ACC schools.

McKever switches positions at NC State, again

videoFormer South Columbus Pharoah McKever is a freshman on the NC State football team. He's no longer playing quarterback, his position in high school. He's no longer a wide receiver. McKever has been switched to a defensive end for the Wolfpack.

NC State baseball team cools off UNCW

videoOn a chilly night in the Port City nationally-ranked NC State rolled over UNCW at Brooks Field. The setback drops UNC Wilmington to 11-12 on the season. NC State improves to 15-8 with the win.

Former Laney swimmer heads to NCAA's with NC State Wolfpack

Jermaine Jones gets chance to shine in front of NFL scouts at NC State

videoCarter-Finley Stadium was the place to be on Monday if you wanted to see one of the best three-sport athletes to come out of New Hanover High School in recent memory. Jermaine Jones is a speedy wide receiver out of St. Augustine's in Raleigh. In fact Jones is one of the fastest guys you'll ever see on a football field. He hopes his speed will catch the attention of NFL scouts.

videoNC State is the first ACC basketball team to secure a win in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in 2014. The Wolfpack basketball squad defeated Xavier on Tuesday. Former UNCW guard Billy Donlon is now the Wright State men's basketball coach. Wright State ended East Carolina's season on Tuesday in the CIT. Former New Hanover track standout Jermaine Jones continues to rack up national honors at St. Augustine's. Plus more!
