The Natural Resources Defense Council released its annual water quality report today. The survey looks at 200 popular beach spots nationwide.
Of the six rated locally, one scored significantly lower than the others.

The Town of Kure Beach had plans to open the new Ocean Front Park in time for tourist season, but now the park that was supposed to be ready this month is being torn down and rebuilt.

The Army Corps of Engineers says it is going to work on $60 million worth of projects this year in and around the Cape Fear waterways. That's good news for many elected leaders of beach towns in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender Counties. They say beach renourishment and dredging are critical to both the local and regional economy.

An area mayor known for saying it how it is says he'll continue to speak his mind despite a recent outburst. Dean Lambeth is known as Kure Beach's straight-shooting mayor, but some have questioned a recent outburst during a town retreat.

The project, located on Atlantic Avenue, will include public restrooms, a playground and pavilion. The new space has been many years in the making and about $4 million from the town and grants for its development. There was a hiccup in the construction of the 3,500 square foot pavilion.

The greater Wilmington area was branded as the Cape Fear Coast in the late 1980's and eventually became the Wilmington Cape Fear Coast, but now that name is being left behind and the region is moving forward with the name Wilmington N.C. Historic River District & Island Beaches.

It's been more than a week, and two local leaders are still not speaking. New Hanover County Commission Chair Jonathan Barfield and Kure Beach Mayor Dean Lambeth have been coming to verbal blows over many different issues over the last couple weeks, and it does not seem that either one is willing to back down.

Kure Beach Town Council is currently dealing with many issues. The one that was top of the agenda at Tuesday's town council meeting was the dredging of the Carolina Beach Inlet.
