Kids learn bike maintenance before taking home new wheels

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Today was day one of a two day program setting up over 100 kids with the very own bicycles. The Bike for Every Child program held a tune up day today at the Brigade Boys and Girls Club.

Kids got a chance to go through a number of stations and learn some basic bike repair tips from professionals before they take their new wheels home tomorrow.

Program founder Kelly Cascaden says she thinks this is an important part of the process.

“We really want this to be an earn a bike program so that ultimately the kids have more of a sense of ownership of the bike that they’re going to be receiving tomorrow and hopefully take better care of it and also be able to maintain it,” said Cascaden.

She said there are about 160 bikes that will be going home with kids tomorrow on the second day of the program. But before the kids hit the road they will go through bike safety training with officers from the Wilmington Police Department.
