BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A bill aimed to remove portions of land from the Town of Sunset Beach has hit a roadblock.

Mayor Ron Watts said a vote this afternoon in the Finance Committee killed the bill for the short session. Watts said this came after it was moved into that committee from another committee on Tuesday. There is a possibility the bill could be brought back in the long session in January, Watts said.

Senate Bill 875, sponsored by Senator Bill Rabon, was aimed to de-annex three parts of the town: Palm Cove on the eastern end, the Sunset Beach West development and Sunset Beach Commons on Seaside Road. The Palm Cove development recently reached a settlement and was removed from the lands in question, the mayor said.

More than 4,000 people signed a petition to oppose the bill.
