OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — Oak Island Town Council and other town leaders received word today that the pier portion of the Oak Island Fishing Pier is being closed because it’s unsafe and dangerous.
Development Services Director Steven Edwards sent the letter, referencing the engineering report by E.B. Pannkuk, as reasons why the pier is unsafe for people to be on.
He also ordered that the pier should be closed and boarded to prevent people from going on it.
This order does not affect the restaurant and store, which may remain open for normal operations.
As for where the future of the pier stands, Oak Island Mayor Cin Brochure says the town is going to rebuild the pier. She says engineers are currently working on the design and permits have been submitted.
Mayor Brochure says they’ve had several inspectors look at the pier and they’re currently waiting on the insurance company to determine what they will pay.
In the meantime, she says FEMA can not tell them how much money they will provide until they know what the insurance company will cover. Mayor Brochure says they’ve also applied for grants, but they can’t get grant money until FEMA makes their decision. She calls the entire process a ‘domino effect.’
Mayor Brochure says they send the insurance company, Lloyds of London, emails two to three times a week.
She says they’re hopeful to have a new pier in place by next season, weather permitting.
