TABOR CITY, NC (WWAY) — A criminal investigation is underway after an inmate was attacked early Wednesday morning at Tabor Correctional Institution.
Sonja Bennett-Bellamy with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety said the assault happened around 7:00 a.m. in a housing unit at the facility.
EMS took the inmate to a local hospital where he was treated and released about 3 1/2 hours later.
Bennett-Bellamy said five inmates were placed in restricted housing as suspects. Local law enforcement responded. They are talking with the district attorney about possible charges.
It’s suspected the five inmates attacked the other with some type of homemade weapon and also placed a padlock inside a sock to use as a weapon.
Immediately after the assault there was a brief lockdown of that housing unit.
Bennett-Bellamy said they do not have names right now of the suspects or the inmate who was beaten.
Another assault also took place this morning at Columbus Correctional Institution.
It happened just before 9:00 a.m.
The inmate does not know who attacked him and can not identify the attacker, Bennett-Bellamy said.
He was taken to Columbus Regional. He was treated and released.
They did not recover a weapon.
Law enforcement is investigation.
No word on the extent of injuries in either case.
