WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — What does Tupac Shakur, Cuba and Freeman Park have in common? The three have a strange connection that resulted in a check for more than $15,000 being released after a decade.
Early this month, Superior Court Judge Joshua Willey ruled that the Clerk of New Hanover County Superior Court Jan Kennedy release the money to the sister of an FBI fugitive.
The Port City Daily broke the news last week.
Kennedy says she fought for 10 years to keep the money from Assata Shakur, a convicted murderer and fugitive believed to be living in Cuba.
Willey ordered the payment as part of the land deal between a private company and the descendants of the Freeman family who owned land at Freeman Park.
Shakur is Tupac Shakur’s godmother.
Kennedy confirmed Monday because of Shakur’s status as a fugitive, they worked to block the payment.
The new order requires payment to Shakur’s sister Beverly Goins.
It is now up to the feds to seize the funds.
