WHITE LAKE, NC (WWAY) — According to the NC Department of Environmental Quality, state officials are now investigating a Bladen County fish kill, where thousands of dead fish washed up on the shore of White Lake.
Earlier this week, WWAY told you a chemical treatment was applied to the lake water in an effort to address algal bloom issues.
Officials with the NCDEQ issued a letter to the town directing them to stop treatment.
The state has not ruled out a connection between the fish kill and the use of the chemical mixture.
Agency staff collected water and fish samples which are being analyzed by a lab in Raleigh.
The public is advised to use caution where a fish kill is happening.
The Town of White Lake says very high pH levels from algae blooms and not the alum treatment is what led to the large number of dead fish in the lake.
