WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — People braved the deluge of rain Saturday to head to the Coastline Conference Center in downtown Wilmington to learn about preparedness and safety when disaster threatens.

It was the 2018 Cape Fear Preparedness & Safety Expo, hosted by the American Red Cross.

Our very own StormTrack3 weather team was on hand to give out souvenirs and meet our viewers.

Many different groups were there to talk about how you should be prepared if a hurricane or another type of disaster affects you or your loved ones.

“I think we certainly saw in 2017 just how powerful hurricanes can be and we live in a hurricane prone area. It’s really important to help our community be prepared for not only hurricanes but all different kinds of disasters,” said James Jarvis, the executive director of American Red Cross’ Cape Fear Chapter.

Look for more from the event, including an interview with Carl Morgan from our local National Weather Service office during the WWAY Hurricane Special. It will air June 1st, the first day of Atlantic Hurricane Season.
