NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — In what they call one of the largest drug busts in North Carolina’s history, investigators say $2 million worth of fentanyl, heroin, and marijuana are now off the streets.

On Wednesday, the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Gang Task Force searched a home in the 1400 block of Kornegay Avenue. They acted on a tip that William McIntire was selling heroin out of the home and eventually made controlled buys of heroin.

During the search, they found 12.7 pounds of a powdery substance that tested positive for fentanyl.

They also found drug paraphernalia, marijuana and heroin.

During a news conference, Sheriff Ed McMahon said they are seeing a change in the way dealers handle opioids.

“What we seem to be finding is the dealers are putting more of the fentanyl and less of the heroin,” McMahon said. “And we believe that’s one of the main reasons why we’re having a lot of these people overdosing and dying.”

McMahon says because one grain of fentanyl can kill you, investigators must take extra precautions and call in CSI as soon as they believe a drug could be fentanyl.

Deputies arrested McIntire, Charles Batts, and Wanda Moore.
