OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — A Virginia woman had her first appearance today in the Brunswick County Courthouse after she was accused of killing her mother.
“We were shocked. We really were. We were shocked cause you wouldn’t think this would happen in your neighborhood but it’s right across from us. It’s shocking,” neighbor Jerry Singleton said.
A neighborhood is still reacting to a murder. Oak Island police reported to the home of Susan Copenhaver Thursday morning. Assistant District Attorney, Glenn Emery says when police arrived at the home Thursday morning, Julia Copenhaver came to the door wearing a sweatshirt and sweatpants, covered in what police say was her mother’s blood. Neighbors were confused when they saw police at first.
“Police lined up and down the street here. We went over and talked to the police and they basically had told us that something very bad but they kept it close to the vest on what had happened but we figured that it was something- somebody had been murdered is what we had figured,” Singleton said.
Her mother’s body was found in the closet and Julia is currently being held with no bond. Neighbors say it’s hard hearing about Susan’s death.
“Very nice lady, very sweet, very personable and nothing but nice things to say,” Singleton said.
The assistant district attorney says Julia Copenhaver has possibly been diagnosed with mental illness and is believed to have not been taking her medication when the alleged murder took place.
