NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Following Monday night’s county commission meeting signs at the entrances of Wilmington’s Hugh MacRae Park were taken down Tuesday afternoon after commissioners voted to change the name.

The new name is Long Leaf Park.

Commissioner Jonathan Barfield proposed the name change Monday night and it passed 3-2.

The park is named after Hugh MacRae who played a significant role in the 1898 Wilmington Massacre.

Although they did not specify a time frame for the name change to take place, signs at both entrances were removed Tuesday including the lettering in the arch at the College Road entrance.
