Doc Watson funeral planned for Sunday in Deep Gap

DEEP GAP, N.C. (AP) – A funeral will be held for Doc Watson of Deep Gap, the Grammy Award-winning folk musician from the North Carolina mountains known for his flatpicking style of playing the guitar.

The funeral scheduled for Sunday is open to the public and will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Laurel Springs Baptist Church in Deep Gap. His body will lie in state at the church for an hour before the funeral. The private burial will be held in the Doc and Merle Watson Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the church.

The 89-year-old Watson died Tuesday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after colon surgery.

Hampton Funeral and Cremation Service in Boone is in charge of the arrangements.
