After 38 years, CFCC captain returns from final voyage at sea

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There was a celebration in downtown Wilmington for Capt. Steve Beuth. He’s retiring after 38 years with Cape Fear Community College.

Monday afternoon he cruised in on his final voyage on the R/V Cape Hatteras. During his time with the college he went on more than 400 voyages, which means he spent eight years of his life at sea.

“We’ve been lucky to do some amazing things,” Beuth said after docking for the final time. “I mean every trip in its own way is a remarkable adventure. Whether they’re four days long to ten days long.”

He said he’s retiring to spend more time with his family, including all of his grandchildren, who showed up to see him come back today as well.
