Campaign signs raising concerns, questions of legality

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s hard not to be bombarded with campaign signs across the area; one sign, however is raising legal questions.

The sign says, “End the arrogance – no Hayes, no Higgins for board of educaction”

The misspelled sign, which is posted anonymously, has some wondering if it is legal or not. The answer – maybe.

The director from the New Hanover County Board of Elections says due to the size of the sign, officials do not require the name for who paid for them or register with the board of elections, unless they paid more than $100 or if they did not act alone.

Don Hayes is one of the candidates targeted.

“I think they’re illegal and cowardly they can put them out all over the county which really doesn’t give the person attacked the opportunity to respond,” Hayes said. “I don’t think the individual graduated from the New Hanover County School system or they would be able to spell ‘education.'”

Hayes said he thinks he knows who put up the sign, but would not disclose that information.

An individual who wanted to remain anonymous said the misspelling was done on purpose.

“Well that could have been brought about to make the signs more noticeable,” he said.

That man, supports whoever made the signs and the overall message.

“They really do not care about the teacher’s well-being,” the man said.
