Police: Man robbed at gunpoint after giving suspect cigarette

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police are investigating after they say a man was robbed at gunpoint when he was walking to friend’s house, after giving the suspect a cigarette.

It happened around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of 7th and Red Cross streets, but officers say the victim didn’t report the crime until Wednesday. Police say the victim told them he was walking to a friend’s house in the area when a man asked him for a cigarette.

After giving the man the cigarette he asked for, that’s when officers say the victim turned around to find the suspect pointing a gun at him. The robber demanded that the victim to put everything he had on the ground before taking off with a cell phone and cash.

Police say the suspect is described as a black male who was wearing a tan hoodie and jeans at the time of the crime. They say he is approximately 5’10” tall. WPD is still investigating.
