Harpo saves Christmas at Brunswick Cove
WINNABOW, NC (WWAY) — The folks at Brunswick Cove Nursing Home have a fantastic holiday season in store this year, and they are saying it is all thanks to a four legged Christmas miracle named Harpo.
Harpo is a 2-year old service dog who, along with his owner Melissa Martin, has some big plans for saving Christmas.
Martin created a Facebook page called “Harpo Saves Christmas!” to help her pooch bring joy to the elderly residents, and before she knew it all 170 residents were adopted by volunteers for the holidays. Folks from across the country are reaching out to complete the wish lists of the nursing home residents. They want to help Harpo make this holiday one to remember.
One resident, Rosita Williams, said that because of Harpo, this is the best Christmas she’s ever had. Williams said she feels like Martin is part of her family and Harpo is like a son to her.
But it’s not just Christmas Harpo is saving. For Adair Douglass, pet therapy with Harpo inspired her to go to physical therapy. Now, Douglass is able to walk again, and she said Harpo’s love is what made it possible.
On Christmas Eve, Martin and Harpo will throw a Christmas party for all the residents complete with homemade treats and snacks and most importantly a special visit from Santa to help Harpo deliver the gifts.
