Leland man charged with running from truck with Red Cross sign
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Investigators say a man initially suspected of possibly trying to scam people by posing as part of the Red Cross has been charged after allegedly running away from a traffic stop.
Navassa Police charged Tommy Ray Bolton, 36, of Leland, with flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane control and possession of stolen goods after they say he ran off when they pulled over his truck Monday.
The stop came after the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office put out an alert for a red pick-up with a Red Cross magnet. Investigators thought the driver may be trying to scam people, but Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Emily Flax says no one has come forward reporting to be a victim.
While police say they did find toys in the truck, Flax says the stolen goods charge stems from the Red Cross magnet being on the truck. She says Bolton claims he found it on the side of the road.
Flax says deputies served Bolton with warrants yesterday while he was in court for a DWI charge.
