7-year-old NC girl killed by truck at bus stop

TARBORO, N.C. (AP) – Authorities say a 7-year-old Edgecombe County girl is dead after she was struck by a pickup truck while she waited for a school bus with three of her siblings.

The N.C. Highway Patrol said Janell Simmons ran from the shoulder of N.C. 43 into the path of the truck shortly before 7 a.m. Thursday. The patrol said the truck driver slowed down for the bus and the children

Janell was transported to Nash General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Patrol spokesman Sgt. Jeff Gordon said the truck driver will not be charged in the accident.

Janell was about to attend her fourth day at G.W. Bulluck Elementary School, where social workers, counselors and psychologists were sent to provide counseling and advice to teachers.
