Planning Commission meets about proposed cell tower

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Planning Commission met tonight to discuss a cell tower off of Middle Sound Road Thursday night.

People who live in the area said the the tower would be an eye sore and don’t want it there. The planning commission was split on what to do about the tower but voted 3 to 2 to approve it.

Folks in opposition said their fight isn’t over.

“I didn’t realize that they could require a two thirds vote, which would mean you would have to have four board members in our favor, and only allowed one in opposition.” Matthew Brenneman, a homeowner. “We’d anticipated it was going to move on to the commissioners office anyhow, but the fact that several of the board members spoke up with their concerns and two of them actually voted in our favor. All in all, I’m pleased with that.”

The New Hanover County Commission will have the final say as to whether or not the tower is built. They will take this issue out at their next meeting on Jan. 20.
