Boyfriend accused of abuse, sending girlfriend’s baby to ICU

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A Leland mother and her boyfriend are both charged in connection to child abuse after detectives say the woman’s baby was hurt so badly that he had to be taken to ICU in Chapel Hill.

Brunswick County investigators say Albert David Morgan, 35, is charged with felony intentional child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury after they say his girlfriend’s infant was left in his care while she was at a doctor’s appointment Thursday.

The baby’s mother, Angel Marie Ray, 33, is charged with felony accessory after the fact in connection to the incident. Detectives say they got a call from New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where they determined the infant’s injuries were consistent with child abuse, after the one-year-old was left in Morgan’s care.

Arrest warrants show that Ray’s child had abrasions and contusions, along with head trauma that resulted in bleeding in the baby’s brain. Detectives say the baby was transported to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Hospital and is in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit there.

Detectives say the mother is charged in connection to the crime for giving false information to authorities, helping her boyfriend avoid being arrested for the abuse. Morgan is behind bars in Brunswick County under a $1,000,000 bond. Ray is also in jail under a $750,000 bond.
