Wright: Easley inconsistent to call for his resignation

RALEIGH (AP) — State Representative Thomas Wright says it's inconsistent of Governor Easley to call for his resignation.

Wright was responding to comments by Easley and Lieutenant Governor Beverly Perdue, both of whom called on the New Hanover County Democrats to step down. Easley and Perdue say the evidence that led state elections officials to ask prosecutors to investigate Wright's campaign finances should prompt him to step down.

Wright says he thinks it's inconsistent for Easley to call for his resignation when he hasn't called for anyone else's. He also says Easley is passing judgment on him before the process works. He says it's grossly and highly unfair of the governor, a fellow Democrat who he's always supported.

Easley says documentary evidence indicates illegal activity, and Wright should "move on." State Board of Elections investigators say evidence indicates Wright may have spent more than 240-thousand dollars in campaign donations on personal expenses.
