UPDATE: Toddler dies from injuries in abuse investigation
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The 14-month-old toddler who investigators say was severely abused has died from his injures. Investigators say new charges are now pending against his mother and her boyfriend.
Brunswick County investigators say Albert David Morgan, 35, is charged with felony intentional child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury after they say his girlfriend’s infant was left in his care while she was at a doctor’s appointment Thursday.
The baby’s mother, Angel Marie Ray, 33, is charged with felony accessory after the fact in connection to the incident. Detectives say they got a call from New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where they determined the infant’s injuries were consistent with child abuse, after the one-year-old was left in Morgan’s care.
Investigators said Brayden Ray succumbed to injuries sustained in the incident and died Saturday. New charges are pending against the pair following the child’s autopsy which was scheduled for today.
Arrest warrants show that Ray’s child had abrasions and contusions, along with head trauma that resulted in bleeding in the baby’s brain. Detectives say the baby was transported to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Hospital and was in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit there.
Morgan is behind bars in Brunswick County under a $1,000,000 bond. Ray is also in jail under a $750,000 bond.
Angel’s brother Brian Ray spoke out in support of his sister. He said that she was a wonderful mother and would never do anything to hurt her son. According to Ray, Morgan asked his sister to lie and say she was at home at the time of the accident. Ray said his sister did not know the extent of her sons injuries until she was in police custody.
“The doctor said it was the equivalent of a 100 mile an hour car crash,” said Brian Ray.
