Farmers welcome rain, need more

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — After weeks without any substantial rainfall this weekend finally provided some relief, especially for farmers.

But the relief may only be temporary.

Lewis Farms in New Hanover County received a good soaking. But the staff there says they still need more water.

The rain is helping the plants overcome the recent dry spell.

In the past several weeks, Mother Nature forced the farm to rely heavily on its underground irrigation system.

Mary Blair with Lewis Farms said, “We’ve been watering twice a day and again at night they have the sprinklers on. So this rain has definitely helped us and it’s nice that it’s a steady rain.”

Lewis Farms says the recent rainfall will improve the quality of their plants and berries.

Despite the rainfall, water restrictions for homeowners remain in place around our area.
