Brunswick County senior community grows

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — It’s the 14th fastest growing county in the nation and Brunswick County officials say they’re making accommodations for an older crowd.

The county’s Senior Resources Director Jim Russell says the over 55 population is growing quickly — increasing more than 20 percent over the past three years, with more than 30,000 older residents now living in the county.

The number of facilities that cater to these seniors will be expanding to accommodate that growth.

Russell said, “The county has recognized that these facilities are inadequate to running a full-range of programs for seniors. I would hazard more than a guess that within the next five years, we will have five more senior centers located around the county.”

At this point Russell says there are no designs or locations chosen to build the new centers. But county officials have already allocated about $1.4 million for senior programs and facility development.
