Edwards announces details of health care overhaul plan

DETROIT (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards wants to reduce the cost of health care by offering cash prizes in lieu of patents for certain breakthrough drugs.

He also wants to require health insurance companies to spend at least 85 percent of their premiums on patient care and less on administrative costs and profits.

The former North Carolina senator detailed his universal health care plan during an appearance at a community clinic today in Detroit.

Edwards has said he'd finance much of the plan by rolling back tax cuts for Americans who make at least 200-thousand dollars.

A spokesman for the Republican National Committee says that's akin to a massive tax increase that would hurt Michigan's economy.
