NEW DETAILS: Search for NBHS student shooter continues
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The police chief of the Leland Police Department says detectives plan to speak again today to the student who was shot next to North Brunswick High School Wednesday.
School officials say the incident happened in front of the campus. The call came in at around 10 a.m. The school was not under lockdown at any time. Brunswick County Schools spokeswoman Jessica Swencki says that’s because the first report to law enforcement came about 45 minutes after the shooting from the hospital, where the victim was taken and already undergoing treatment.
“There are multiple communication strategies used when managing a situation like this week. With regard to our school message calls, we do not have a designated policy. Every situation is different. Principals and central services staff have the capacity to make the decision to make calls,” said Swencki.
Police say the victim, a student, hasn’t identified his shooter. Leland Police Chief Mike James adds the student only mentioned a gold sedan that left the scene.
“The description that he gave us of the suspect vehicle was a gold sedan with two male occupants in the vehicle, he told them the vehicle did leave,” said James. “”We are in the process of still interviewing the victim.”
Police say his injuries were not life-threatening.
