N.C. Democrats working on Dole challenge

RALEIGH (AP) — North Carolina and national Democrats still are looking for a candidate to challenge Republican Senator Elizabeth Dole next year. One Democratic consultant says the party may consider letting up on the search a bit.

Congressman Brad Miller is the latest person to decline a run against Dole. Governor Easley -isn't- interested in running, while two other high-profile Democrats — Bev Perdue and Richard Moore — are running to succeed Easley.

Consultant Brad Crone says it might be better to find a candidate whose job it would be to keep the pressure on Dole during a campaign but understand that a victory is a long shot.

The campaign money that would have gone to an A-list candidate instead would go to efforts to keep the governor's mansion and extend majorities in the General Assembly and the Congress.
