Red light fees could go up

WILMINGTON — If you run a red light in Wilmington it could soon cost you even more.

Right now the fine is $50 for running a light at a safelight intersection. But a recent court ruling takes most of that revenue away from the City and gives it to local schools.

To make it financially feasible for cities to keep the program up and running there’s a proposal in the state legislature to increase the fine to $75.

The state Senate and governor would still have to approve the bill before it could go into effect.
